Dr Rob Kelly

After obtaining an honours degree from the University of KwaZulu Natal in 1967, Dr Kelly joined the National Herbarium and Botanic Gardens in Zimbabwe for a 2-year spell gaining experience in the systematics of a number of plant taxa occurring in Zimbabwe. During his time here he developed an interest in plant community ecology which led to the awarding of a scholarship to study plant ecology in the south-eastern lowveld of Zimbabwe. For this work he was awarded a PhD by London University in 1974. In 1975 he took up a research post at Nuanetsi Experiment Station in the south of Zimbabwe investigating ways of increasing the production of domestic and wild animal products by manipulating the vegetation whilst at the same time maintaining the stability of the ecosystem. This work came to a halt in 1978 due to the civil war. From then until 1981 he worked on veld and planted pasture improvement via the introduction of various legume species at Makoholi and Grassland Research Station’s.

In 1982 Dr Kelly took up a position with a private company involved in the production of pasture and crop seeds. After 5 years he started his own company, Agriseeds (Pvt) Ltd, which now contributes a significant proportion of various crop seeds grown in Zimbabwe as well as exporting into the Southern African region.

Dr Kelly has for many years had an interest in small-holder farmers and their viability. From the start these farmers have participated in seed production for the company and continue to do so, especially for crops such as sorghum, millet, groundnuts, cowpeas and sunnhemp. Such farmers have also played an important role in Zimbabwe’s economy and will continue to do so into the future. At Dr Kelly’s initiative Agriseeds is currently working with the NGO community in a project investigating ways in which small-holders can improve their lives through profitable farming and increase their contribution to the national economy.

His current responsibilities include Chairman of the Agriseeds (Pvt) Ltd and Member of Market Linkage Working Group committee.
